This Tompkins fleece after hood double V-gusset hoodie is made of fabric produced on the legendary Tompkins upright rotary knitting machine. Developed during the mid-1800s, the vintage Tompkins, with its slow and steady pace, has poor production efficiency when compared with modern loopwheel units, but produces a fabric that is similar in texture and weight to the excellent jersey knit of the late 1800s. The unit we use is one of only a handful still in operation in Japan, and it is even rarer than loopwheel knitting machines. Unlike modern circular knitting machines that normally knit from top to bottom at high speed, the Tompkins knits slowly from bottom to top and produces a thick soft fabric that contains plenty of air. By napping the lining we have created a unique fluffy texture that cannot be experienced with ordinary sweatshirt fabrics.
The design is based on a classic double-V-gusset after hoodie and is characterized by the 4-needle flat seam construction. Classic details include the inset V-gussets on the front and back that are secured using 4-needle flat seam stitching, the hood that is attached below the binder crewneck, and the kangaroo pocket that is overlocked at the ends and sewn using 2-needle stitching.
Rather than use the classic box shape, we adopted a regular fit with a pleasing silhouette that still looks good when wearing other layers.
